Forum Marketing Etiquette

Nothing screams “brilliant opportunity” as internet marketing does. This is why it is important for you to read the basic forum rules on each forum site if you do not want to lose out on serious profit making opportunities.

Those rules provide guidelines as to what you can and cannot do on the forum, which should help you draw your limits as to how aggressive your marketing can be on these forums. Not knowing these rules often leads to carelessness which in turn leads to unnecessary bans, thereby blacklisting the particular user’s name.

Therefore, read the rules before joining any forum as this is absolutely crucial, and it comprises the first rule in successful internet marketing. The rules of the forum are posted right at the beginning under the guidelines or the general discussion category. These rules are not too detailed nor are they too tedious.

Many forums simply ban or disapprove of any kind of aggressive self promotion and improper comments which may offend the sensibilities of other forum members. However, the degree of strictness in implementing these rules differs from site to site, so check beforehand as this is the safest way to not get yourself in trouble or banned permanently.

Remember, you are a fellow forum member who has joined because you like the sound of the forum and the topics being discussed in it. You are not supposed to be there to market yourself, so do not start singing your own praises and that of your website and product the moment you enter, especially without context.

Read what is being discussed, see how the forum is, whether formal or informal, and respond to it. Moreover get to know some of the other members of the forum, and build a rapport before bringing up the subject of your website. You should also be subtle about that.

Following the threads also has another bonus. If you follow, then you can keep track of certain queries raised by members, and if this falls in your area of expertise then you can help them out and solve their problems. This may even lead them subtly to your site containing matters about these issues.

This not only gets you traffic to your site but also creates your reputation. This procedure becomes even more relevant for sites which let you add links to your websites along with your name. Thus in time, your credibility will increase, and people will flock to your site to seek help or buy your product, thereby increasing your sales.

A problem a lot of newbie marketers face is they become too aggressive too quickly. This is especially true after hearing about how much money can be made through internet marketing, and hearing stories of how the “gurus” have become overnight successes pulling in six or more figures and quitting their day jobs. This has caused newbies to try too hard and getting banned by forums quickly as well as quickly obtaining tarnished reputations.

So just go ahead and follow the etiquettes and all will be fine.
