Forum Marketing Can Become Addicting

Forum marketing is a great means of marketing if it is done correctly. However, it can be the financial equivalent of stepping on a land mine. Forum marketing basically shows your expertise and helps your build a reputation. That is, if you do it the right way. On the other hand, doing it incorrectly will only reflect your lack of expertise and turns your name into mud.

Once you have decided which forums you will use, go through their rules and regulations. Each forum’s rules and regulations are different. Many have banned topics, and some allow advertisements while others do not. So the first thing to do is learn the rules of the road because not following the forum’s rules will terminate your profile. Furthermore, even if allowed you should not advertise through your posts or comments. Rely on the signature to promote you and your business.

Before you start actually posting go thoroughly through the forum’s contents once. Reading through the forum will give you a good idea about what the forum is all about and the best way to approach it. Trying to barge in will have a negative impact within the forum and that is one land mine you surely want to avoid.

Always remember that along with newcomers the best known brains in the online marketing industry are also posting on these forums. So, before you post something on a given topic or try to comment on a post make sure you have the necessary expertise to comment. If you do not have the necessary knowledge and shoot from the hip then at best you will be ignored, or at worse, experienced marketers will call you to task and that will certainly ruin your reputation.

There is nothing wrong in creating a little controversy in these forums. I sometimes acquire some of my best and most successful business ideas from such forum topics which have created some form of argument among the ranks, but understand that this is entirely different than being called a fraud. This means if you are called to task then you should be ready to back up your argument with evidence.

Therefore, comment when you can help someone with a problem, otherwise keep mum. The objective of forums is all about helping each member with a common goal. If you can provide help then go for it because whether good or bad, the reputation you create on the forums will be synonymous with you throughout your online career in internet marketing.

Marking Your Presence through Forums

Being involved in the business of network, you will know that participating in forums is an effective way to grow your downline if you do forum marketing the right way. If you are using forums to build your downline, there are two basic things you must do regularly to get hundreds of your target audience interested in checking you out and joining your team.

Regular Participation

Inability to use forum marketing everyday is overlooked quite often. Most people think after joining a forum and participating for a few days that people will check them out. Unfortunately, they generate no leads because you must post regularly before anybody will check you out.

Here is what you should do for maximum results. First, locate three to five forums that are in your network marketing field by searching on Google. By doing this you will get a list of recommended forums to join and participate in.

While doing your search make sure you look for forums that have at least 10,000 members. This will increase your chances of getting enough traffic that will subsequently pay for the time you have spent posting on the forum.

Next, prepare a good signature through your profile settings. Create something that will get everybody’s attention towards you after reading your posts. However, do not overtly try to advertise your signature, but rather be subtle and get the message across. Every little detail you think will add to your credibility should be added in your profile.

Once you have done this, introduce yourself to the community. After that make sure you regularly post on the forum. Traffic will not come if you have not regularly posted on the forums for at least 2 weeks.

Only Post High Quality Content

Every day you will encounter new people who will post questions. Try to reply to every post that you have an answer to or an opinion about. Do this for at least 5 people each day on each forum. You can also ask relevant questions yourself for attracting replies so that people will notice your signature link.

Also, try to write posts that are informative and are relevant. This benefits others on the forum. You should also write articles based on your experience. For example, write about topics in areas where you have been successful in getting traffic, or write about any similar useful tip that would help others build their businesses.

Following these two tips will help make your presence known in the forums, not to mention make you highly reputable. Others will come to you with questions if they feel you will greatly benefit them.

Forum Marketing Etiquette

Nothing screams “brilliant opportunity” as internet marketing does. This is why it is important for you to read the basic forum rules on each forum site if you do not want to lose out on serious profit making opportunities.

Those rules provide guidelines as to what you can and cannot do on the forum, which should help you draw your limits as to how aggressive your marketing can be on these forums. Not knowing these rules often leads to carelessness which in turn leads to unnecessary bans, thereby blacklisting the particular user’s name.

Therefore, read the rules before joining any forum as this is absolutely crucial, and it comprises the first rule in successful internet marketing. The rules of the forum are posted right at the beginning under the guidelines or the general discussion category. These rules are not too detailed nor are they too tedious.

Many forums simply ban or disapprove of any kind of aggressive self promotion and improper comments which may offend the sensibilities of other forum members. However, the degree of strictness in implementing these rules differs from site to site, so check beforehand as this is the safest way to not get yourself in trouble or banned permanently.

Remember, you are a fellow forum member who has joined because you like the sound of the forum and the topics being discussed in it. You are not supposed to be there to market yourself, so do not start singing your own praises and that of your website and product the moment you enter, especially without context.

Read what is being discussed, see how the forum is, whether formal or informal, and respond to it. Moreover get to know some of the other members of the forum, and build a rapport before bringing up the subject of your website. You should also be subtle about that.

Following the threads also has another bonus. If you follow, then you can keep track of certain queries raised by members, and if this falls in your area of expertise then you can help them out and solve their problems. This may even lead them subtly to your site containing matters about these issues.

This not only gets you traffic to your site but also creates your reputation. This procedure becomes even more relevant for sites which let you add links to your websites along with your name. Thus in time, your credibility will increase, and people will flock to your site to seek help or buy your product, thereby increasing your sales.

A problem a lot of newbie marketers face is they become too aggressive too quickly. This is especially true after hearing about how much money can be made through internet marketing, and hearing stories of how the “gurus” have become overnight successes pulling in six or more figures and quitting their day jobs. This has caused newbies to try too hard and getting banned by forums quickly as well as quickly obtaining tarnished reputations.

So just go ahead and follow the etiquettes and all will be fine.

Getting Started with Forum Marketing

Forum marketing can help get your online business noticed. Forum users, by and large, are tech and net savvy and like purchasing things online. Many who frequent forums are also authorities on the topics discussed in the particular forum.

Forum marketing, therefore, helps make a good impression with a knowledgeable and influential audience. This can help spread word all over the internet and beyond.

A simple step-by-step procedure can help you effectively make forum marketing a part of your marketing strategy.

Not all forums host the people you want to communicate with.  You should choose a group of 5-10 forums on where to concentrate your energies.  Ensure that these forums have at least 10,000 posts from at least 1,000 members.  Also, concentrate on forums where there are at least 10-15 new posts each day.

Avoid forums that are hosted by your direct competitors as well as those that are flooded by spam.

Create your forum accounts as soon as possible.  This is helpful because seniority is given a lot of importance in most online forums: some even require you to wait a few days before making your first post.

When you sign up, you will be asked to agree to their user agreements and posting guidelines.  Read these documents very carefully.  A lot of people skip this and just click yes, mainly because there is a lot of legal jargon that no one cares to read. However, some important things to look for are:

  • Are you allowed to include links in your posts?

  • Can you promote your business?

  • Can you use commercial messages as your signature?

  • Can you contact other members for business purposes on the forum?

  • Are there restrictions on new and privileges for old members?

  • Your user name is the first thing that’ll be noticed.  Pick one that’s memorable, simple, and can be easily pronounced. You might want to use your real name and/or the name of your company.  Do not use random combinations of letters and/or numbers, or something that’s significant to you and you alone.

Create a profile that will help you establish credibility.  Put up a description of your experience and expertise. Personal information can help break the ice, but don’t venture into topics that can alienate anyone, like race, religion, or political affiliation.

Above all, treat forum marketing as an integral part of your long-term strategy, not just a one-off opportunity to bombard the message boards with information about your hot new product.  Nobody likes spam!
